Davao City is blessed with a large land area — in fact one of the largest in the world. With majority of its area classified as suitable for agriculture, there are numerous opportunities to produce high-yield crops for domestic or international market.
One of the identified crops for production is Arabica coffee, amid growing demand from coffee shops and related industries. Tapped to address this market demand are upland farmers, according to city agriculturist Leo Avila III who saw the opportunity to help farmers improve their incomes.
“This is one investment that could help our farmers in the upland. They have long needed support from the government and this is an intervention that could help them,” said Avila.
Areas identified as suitable for planting Arabica variety are Marilog, Toril, Baguio District, Tamayong, and Carmen.
Davao City is home to numerous coffee shops who offer special blend of coffee. Even international brand Starbucks seems unfazed by local competition as it successfully launched its presence at Abreeza Mall.
