Some 20 international airlines have signified interest in establishing direct flights to Davao, a local tourism official said.
Department of Tourism – Davao regional directory Roberto Alabado III said the these carriers are considering Davao as their next area of expansion.
According to a report by Sun.Star Davao, Air China, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, Jeju Air and EVA Air were among those who made expansion of plans after representatives attended the Airline Operators Council (AOC) two-day outboard meeting held in Davao City last April 29 to 30.
Alabado said that the DOT assistant secretary Art Boncato has been courting the council to hold their meeting here for years.
“We invited them (international airlines) over and see Davao, most of them are first time in the city. Sir Boncato has been courting them for the past years and it was only this year that it was realized,” Alabado said.
“We just really hope that these airlines will establish direct flights here and for the existing and operating airlines here, we also hope that they will add more connectivity,” Alabado said.
DOT-Davao has continued its efforts to help airlines with existing flights to ensure foreign and domestic passenger traffic to Davao City is sustained.
The Tourism Department is actively promoting Davao as destination of choice in marketing and promotions in foreign countries including China, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia, among others.
DOT-Davao is currently gearing up for a business mission in Malaysia and Singapore on May 23 and 24 to further augment tourism arrivals in Davao Region.
